SITA materials recycling facility opens in Aberdeen

A new 250,000 materials recycling facility in the heart of Aberdeen was opened today by Lewis Macdonald, the Scottish deputy minister for Environment.

Operated by SITA UK on behalf of the city council, the new MRF will manage dry recyclables collected through Aberdeen's kerbside collection scheme, recycling points and recycling centres.

” It is a true example of how working in partnership with the Council and the Scottish Executive can provide what the public wants.“
– Peter Lawrence, SITA

The facility includes storage areas of paper and colour-separated glass, and sorting and baling machinery for mixed cans and plastic bottles. It will handle around 8,500 tonnes of dry recyclables annually

The facility has been provided by SITA as an interim facility to allow the council to develop the city's kerbside recycling scheme. A larger and more sophisticated plant is planned by SITA to meet targets set by the Scottish Executive for recycling and composting, the company said.

Peter Lawrence, SITA's general manager for Aberdeen, said: “It is a true example of how working in partnership with the council and the Scottish Executive can provide what the public wants, enabling them to do their bit and minimise our impact on the environment.”

Targets
SITA’s 25-year contract with the city council began in the year 2000. Under the contract, the city is aiming to reach targets to recycle 25% of its household waste while reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill by 40%. The city is currently recycling 11% of its waste.
