Shredded tyres on fire at Sheffield recycling plant

Up to 250 tonnes of shredded tyres are on fire at a recycling plant in the Attercliffe area of Sheffield, according to the South Yorkshire Fire and Civil Defence Authority.

The site in question is run by a company called Granutyre, having been sold by Credential Tyre Recycling nine months ago.

The blaze is believed to started in a 100 sq m warehouse early this morning (December 15) with the fire brigade attending at 08.45. Nine fire appliances are tackling the blaze along with support from high platform vehicles.

The plant is one of the most modern of its type in the UK and is capable of producing large quantities of rubber crumb.

A spokeswoman for the fire authority said that the blaze was expected to be under control by midday. Traffic on the neighbouring Parkway dual-carriageway into Sheffield had been hampered by thick black smoke but the M1 motorway was unaffected.

She added that it is too early to identify the cause of the blaze.
