Sharp rise in packaging recovery in first quarter

First quarter packaging waste data for the UK has been published this week as a result of industry efforts to speed up production of the data.

The work has been instigated by the Advisory Committee on Packaging, chaired by John Turner, and shows that for the first three months of 2006, there has been a substantial increase year on year in recycling of several materials.

Exports

And, the data also confirms the importance of the export market as an outlet for the recycling or packaging materials such as plastic film and bottles and cardboard.
In the first quarter of the year, a total of 1.5 million tonnes of packaging was recycled. With 121,281 tonnes of further material recovered through energy from waste – largely in the municipal stream – first quarter figures for total recovery including recycling stood at 1,625,667 tonnes.

This represents a substantial increase of 160,000 compared to the previous year. There has been growth in the glass sector of 58,000 tonnes and metals have also seen strong growth. In particular aluminium packaging, while a small component, has jumped by almost 50% to 12,957 tonnes compared to 8,718 tonnes in 2005.
