The parliament's Environment and Rural Development Committee issued a call for evidence from stakeholders on Wednesday (3/09/03), and said that evidence sessions would take place on September 17 and 24 and October 1 and 8, 2003.
The committee hopes to hear evidence from a wide range of stakeholders, including statutory bodies, waste management companies and community organisations on the following key areas:
- The current position of implementing Scotland's National Waste Plan
- Effectiveness of targets and priorities in the Plan
- Progress being made towards reaching targets
- How the plan fits in with European policy, best practice and future obligations
- Funding available through the Strategic Waste Fund
- The effectiveness of Area Waste Plans
- Developing markets for waste
- Improving non-municipal waste management
- Relationships between the Scottish Executive, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, local authorities, community organisations and other stakeholders
Launching the inquiry, committee convener Sarah Boyack said, “Scotland has an extremely poor record on waste management. The work of the eleven waste strategy areas and the new National Waste Plan provide an opportunity for us to catch up as we try to meet challenging targets and learn from best practice elsewhere. Our inquiry will look at how well key organisations are geared up for this challenge.”
Evidence for the inquiry should be submitted no later than 12 noon on Friday, October 3, 2003 by emailing:
