Royal Charter presented to Institute of Wastes Management

The Institute of Wastes Management received its Royal Charter of Incorporation yesterday at a special ceremony during its annual presidential dinner in London.

On behalf of Her Majesty the Queen and the Privy Council, Graham Donald, deputy clerk to the council, presented the signed charter to IWM president Cathy O’Brien. Mr Donald said: “The granting of a charter is a considerable accolade and you join a select band of some 400 chartered institutions. It is a considerable cachet to have been granted a charter personally by the head of state. Nowadays only a few are granted each year.”

Cathy O&#39B;rien said the Institute was honoured to receive chartered status. “At CIWM we look forward to our role in the future and the award gives credence to our work to date.”

Margaret Beckett, Secretary of State for the Environment, offered her “hearty congratulations” to the Institute. “I know that it means a great deal for the Institute and it recognises your professional status.”

In the wake of the successful gaining of chartered status, which was first sought in 1985, the IWM president presented several meritorious medals. Recipients included John Ferguson, a distinguished former IWM president and tireless campaigner for chartered status; Mike Philpott, IWM chief executive; Professor John Salter, an IWM fellow who has helped with chartered work; and Mark Gibson, the Institute’s education officer.

A medal was also presented to David Mills, a longstanding IWM supporter and former top regulator, by past president Roger Hewitt.
