Rethink Rubbish awareness campaign looks to expand in 2003

National waste awareness campaign Rethink Rubbish is aiming to increase the number of local authorities who use its brand from 134 to 225 by April 2004.

The campaign is holding a number of briefing events across the country between April 28 and May 2, 2003, to raise its profile among local authorities, retailers and other interested organisations.

Commenting on the campaign's ambitions for 2003, Rethink Rubbish coordinator Steve Haugh said: “Our main aim is to build on the good work we’ve done in the past 12 months. We are also looking to increase the number of retailers we are working with.”

The 12 companies already involved with the campaign include Argos, Tesco, Sainburys, Boots and B&Q.;

Gareth Morton, NWAI projects director explained: “Last year was a phenomenal first year for the Rethink Rubbish campaign with 134 local authorities and 12 retailers signing up to use the branding. The media campaign alone created 102.5 million 'opportunities to see' and the brand could be seen in 1,200 retail outlets.”

Campaigns last year included celebrity endorsements from the impressionist Alistair McGowan and former swimmer Sharron Davies and a giant bin capable of speeds up to 15mph, seen by half a million people. Mr Haugh said that the giant bin will feature again in this year’s campaign, appearing at Rethink Rubbish roadshows. “We hope to raise the brand’s profile with the public,” he said.

Surveys by Rethink Rubbish, showed an 8% increase (35% to 43%) in public awareness of waste and recycling issues and an 8% in crease (54% to 62%) in people who said they could do more to protect the environment.

The Rethink Rubbish free briefing events are open to local authorities, retailers and any other organisations interested in involvement with the campaign.
