Renewi’s East Ham MBT operational after fire

A Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility operated by Renewi in East Ham, London, is operating as normal after a fire earlier this week involving around 600 tonnes of shredded household waste.

Around 70 firefighters were called to the site on Jenkins Lane on Wednesday (April 24) at 15:39 and brought the fire under control within around four hours.

Crews remained on the scene for “some time” after damping down and extinguishing pockets of fire, London Fire Brigade said.

Station Manager Ian Frame, who was at the scene, said: “Around 600 tonnes of shredded household waste was alight and crews worked hard to bring the fire under control.”

Investigation

Around 10 fire engines and crews from East Ham, Barking, Plaistow, Ilford, Poplar, Stratford and surrounding fire stations attended the incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A spokesperson for Renewi, which operates the facility under its contract with the East London Waste Authority, said: “Due to the quick work of our team and the fire brigade, the small fire at our Jenkins Lane facility was quickly extinguished.

“We are pleased that no-one was hurt and that our efficient incident management procedures meant that there was no material damage to the building or equipment. The facility is operating as normal today. Investigations to determine the cause of the fire are underway.”
