Recycling reward schemes for St Helens and Peterborough

Recycling rewards firm Local Green Points has been appointed to operate schemes on behalf of both St Helens council in Merseyside and Peterborough city council in Cambridgeshire.

The schemes, which were announced today (October 30) are designed to motivate local residents to recycle more material and cut down on residual waste in return for charity and retail rewards. Funding for the work is coming from the Department for Communities and Local Government’s (DCLG) recycling reward scheme fund.

The announcement of the St Helens scheme in particular will come as a boost for recycling in the Merseyside region, with Halton council having earlier this month announced the end of its recycling reward scheme, operated by Greenredeem, due to funding cuts from central government (see letsrecycle.com story).

All 84,000 households in St Helens will be eligible for the new reward scheme, which will be promoted using the council’s existing cast of “bin-based characters” known as ‘The Recyclables’, according to Local Green Points.

Residents will earn points for waste minimisation and recycling, which can be put towards rewards for four local charities, which will share a £5,000 donation fund. Charities selected for the first 12 months of the scheme are: The Hope Centre; Willowbrook Hospice; the Steve Prescott Foundation; and the Honey Rose Foundation.

In addition, St Helens residents will also earn individual rewards for recycling, such as vouchers for local department store Tyrer’s, Cineworld, B&Q, Marks & Spencer, iTunes and National Garden Gift Vouchers. There will also be prize draws with opportunities to win vouchers for local attractions.

As part of the scheme, all residents will receive a St Helens recycling rewards card and key fob enabling them to access offers and discounts at more than 70 local retailers.

Director of environmental protection at St Helens council, Paul Sanderson, said: “We’re pleased to be working with Local Green Points on recycling rewards and it’s great to see so many of our local businesses coming together with local charities and the council to provide our residents with the motivation to increase recycling.”

Peterborough

The Peterborough scheme will cover 35,000 households across seven wards of the city – Eye & Thorney, Stanground, Hampton, East, Walton, Paston and North Bretton – under the council’s ‘Love Peterborough Love Your Community’ brand.

Local Green Points managing director, Graham Simmonds, commented: “It’s great that residents can earn points for a range of behaviours covering dry recycling, food waste, reusable nappies and even renting an allotment, and we’re excited to be working with Peterborough city council and Amey on this innovative new scheme.”

He added: “Local Green Points is a market leader in services for local authorities to engage residents in waste and recycling and working with these two new council clients mean we now have coverage across most regions in England.”

Backed by sustainable rewards programme firm Green Rewards, Local Green Points also operates local authority recycling schemes in Coventry, Torbay and the London boroughs of Bexley and Havering. A pilot scheme has also been run by the firm in the London borough of Tower Hamlets (see letsrecycle.com story).
