Recycling officers urged to apply for free WRAP training

LARAC has advised local authority recycling officers to sign up for free WRAP training aimed at helping them develop best practice.

WRAP is working with CIWM to offer residential training courses to recycling and composting managers from local authorities and the private sector this Autumn. The courses, which cover how to develop cost-effective systems, achieve high participation rates and meet end market requirements, are intended to help officers achieve government targets.

Janet Westmoreland, chair of the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee, said: “LARAC has long identified improved training for recycling managers as crucial to the growth of recycling. Demand for places will be high, so I encourage recycling officers to apply early.”

The pilot scheme is part of WRAP's quality sourcing activities aimed at helping local authorities achieve government targets.

Chris Davey, quality sourcing manager for WRAP and also a former chair of LARAC, said: “The programme aims to enhance the skills base of recycling managers in the UK and, alongside increased funding by government, will give local authorities the help they need to reach the statutory recycling targets set by government.”

The courses will be split into two skill levels: standard courses will cover legislation affecting recyclable collections, development of systems, meeting market specifications and negotiating contracts.

The advanced courses will look at the links between collection systems and end-market demands for materials and the options for treating source segregated organic waste and help officers assess the potential for waste minimisation strategies and design education programmes.
