Plasgran boosts compounding capacity with Erema investment

Cambridgeshire based plastics recycler Plasgran has invested £1.7 million in a new EREMA compounding system, to more than double the compounding capacity at its Wimblington plant.

The addition of the new compounding unit at the end of March means that PLASgran now has four compounding lines in operation, with the new line adding a total of 18,000 tonnes of capacity to the line.

Plasgran now has the capacity to compound up to 36,000 tonnes of rigid and flexible plastics on the site.

According to the company the newly installed Intarema 2018 TVEplus system will allow it to handle a wider range of input streams, as well as handling materials that have traditionally been seen as ‘difficult to process’ such as very moist materials and heavily-printed films.

Polymers

Materials handled at the Wimblington plant include high-density polyethylene (HDPE), high impact polystyrene (HIPs) and poly-propylene (PP) from both post-consumer and post-industrial sources.

Plasgran adds that the filtration, homogenisation and degassing capability of the new unit will allow it to filter to far finer levels than previously, down to less than 100µm, helping to increase the quality of the polymers it produces.

Commenting on the installation of the new line, Plasgran’s managing director Mark Roberts, said: “We are driving to be a leader in the supply of recycled plastic materials across a wide range of polymers and compound specifications. Plastics processing on site also includes electrostatic separation, optical sorting and metal extraction; as well as high specification cleaning, de-dusting and washing facilities to produce regrind blends suitable for direct conversion processes.
