Ayrshire-based Lowmac Recycling Ltd has installed a Macpresse Mac 108L/1 in a bid to help it divert waste from landfill.

The baling press, which can produce a one tonne and a half bale every two minutes, is designed for processing municipal solid waste and boasts benefits such as low energy consumption, high productivity and easy maintenance.

The press can also be fitted with an optional leachate conveyor if required, while a retractable tying system and needle gates guarantee a reliable tying cycle when using steel wire or plastic wire for refuse-derived fuel applications.

Lowmac Recycling director Kenny Smith said: The new baling press will enable us to achieve our zero waste policy, diverting any residues away from landfill. We are very pleased with how it has performed so far.

Norse subsidiary takes delivery of Boughton hook-loaders

Norfolk Enviornmental Waste Services (NEWS) has received delivery of six Boughton hook-loader equppied Volvo FM 8-wheelers.

A subsidiary of Norse Commercial Services, NEWS will use the vehicles to assist servicing the 19 household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) in Norfolk under its contract with the county council, while a further two Boughton close coupled trailers have been purchased to improve efficiency of the fleet.

The hook-loader systems all feature an automatic contrainer sheeting system, rear combi-locks and axle stabilisers and VBG couplings.

Meanwhile, the new Volvo FM vehicles are fitted with 13-litre Euro V SCR 6-cylinder engines and are rated for operation at 32 tonnes GVW and 44 tonnes GVW.

NEWS operational contracts manager, David Lake, said: It is imperative that NEWS is able to demonstrate efficient fleet management, improved environmental performance and therefore best value to Norfolk County Council within the servicing of this new contract.

With the introduction of KP Wastes pay as you throw service for customers, Vehicle Weighing Solutions (VWS) has installed an Enviroweigh bin-weighing system in its food waste collection vehicle.

The system means North London-based company can now make reports for its customers so they can compare their food disposal on a daily or weekly basis.

KP Wastes 7.5 tonne FARID minimatic vehicle has been adapted to incorporate a tipping mechanism for food waste and can handle underground collections with low ceiling loading bays.

VWS also installed a four-camera CCTV system on the vehicle, which gives all-round vision and helps prevent accidents.

Julian Glasspole, managing director, VWS said: KP Waste are a great, forward thinking company and they are demonstrating how dynamic bin-weighing can help companies gain a competitive edge by offering a more accurate and informative service to customers.

Solar panels installed on Lakeside EfW roof

Solar photovoltaic panels have been installed on Lakeside energy-from-waste facilitys roof to boost energy-savings at the plant.

One third of the south-facing curved roof at the back of the facility now accommodates 1,000 solar panels, which generate 230,500 kwh of sustainable energy a year a total carbon saving of 137,000 tonnes.

The panels were installed by local firm BELECTRIC UK, whose head office operates just five miles from the plant.

Danny Coulston, Director of Operations at Lakeside said: This was not a straightforward job because the curvature of the roof meant that very close attention had to be paid to health and safety. The BELECTRIC team worked very closely with us in this challenging environment and did an excellent job.

IQR FlexHammer installed at Avonmouth

Boomeco Ltd has installed an IQR Model 1800 FlexHammer at its 80,000 tonne-a-year recycling depot in Avonmouth, which passed the firms specifications for shredding.

The FlexHammer is fitted with a Caterpillar V12 875Hp diesel engine, and is fitted with an IQR mill, hydraulic reject door, over-band electro magnet, interchangeable screens and fire suppression technology.

Oliver Latter, managing director of Boomeco, said the machinery met his specifications for having minimal fines, and maintaining an average throughput of 40 tonnes per hour. It also produced a uniform product size in one pass without the need for pre-shredding.

He said: We not only achieved a higher throughput but the machine also handled the contamination we get in our wood with no bother, the steel was also very evenly fragged so we now get a better product from this also.
