UKCM launches comb-bar repair system

Waste container repair and refurbishment firm UK Container Maintenance (UKCM) has devised a system to replace comb bars on steel bins – which it is claimed can increase the life of the containers.

Replacement comb bars (frontal receivers) can be fitted to containers which have suffered damage to the lifting point and cannot be rectified correctly. A replacement frontal receiver which meets BS EN 840/2 2012 is installed in-line with its original specification.

UKCM is also currently trialling comb bar protectors for 1100L plastic containers with a number of waste management companies including Brown Recycling Limited, Grundon Waste Management and The Shorts Group.

Adding comb bar protectors can strengthen plastic containers which suffer damage to the frontal receiver, UKCM claims. This new service will launch in January 2017.

Emma Elston MBE, chief executive of UKCM, said: “We are constantly looking at new ways to prolong the life of containers. Replacing comb bars on steel containers and offering comb bar protectors for plastic units will certainly benefit our customers and help them save money, as these can now be repaired rather than sending them to scrap.

“At UKCM we are passionate about strengthening containers, whether they are old or new. By keeping them strong, it helps customers protect these valuable assets and reduce the need for investing in new.”

The R400 features hydraulic release and a patented hydraulic crusher overload system, which can be put to use in Britanniacrest’s recycling applications.

Britaniacrest’s new crusher is processing around 3,500 tonnes a week, predominantly hardcore, concrete and demolition debris that form part of the waste stream which enters the company’s waste transfer stations.

The unit has an output potential of up to 400 tonnes per hour and is economical to operate due to a highly efficient direct drive system.

Commenting on the purchase, Britanniacrest director Ray Foss Jr, said: “We’ve bought quite a lot of machines from Blue London over the years – both Powerscreen crushers and screeners as well as Doppstadt shredders. Apart from the proven excellence of these market-leading brands, we also have a great working partnership with Blue, we know we can rely on them right from the start of the purchasing process through to their impressive after sales product support.“

The technology will form part of the company’s future vehicle specifications, the local authority-owned company has said, in a bid to enhance its safety credentials.

ISS designs, supplies and maintains vehicle safety and efficiency equipment, including vehicle CCTV, hard disk recording, remote footage download systems, reversing radar, fuel saving modules, vehicle-tracking systems, LED lighting and warning beacons.

Ubico also plans to use the ISS LANlink remote footage download facility when all of its depots are fully up and running. This will enable all recorded footage to be downloaded automatically each time a vehicle returns to the depot.

Mark Hulbert, fleet manager, Ubico, said: “We want to make sure we are protecting the public and our crew. ISS have obviously thought long and hard about their systems. They’ve thought about the end user and developed their products for them. We can quickly access specific sections of footage and the mapping feature means we can also see the exact location of vehicles. They bent over backwards to provide the correct solution for our needs.”

Crawfords moves for RVS RediTruck

Crawfords of Beith has acquired a new RediTruck from Gloucestershire-based Refuse Vehicle Solutions Ltd (RVS), as part of its haulage contract for Highland waste recycler Munros.

The vehicle is a Daf CF fitted with an Olympus 23W body and a Beta Trade bin lift. Crawfords only had two weeks to replace the truck, and RVS’ RediTruck service enables vehicle operators to buy a new refuse vehicle from stock without having to wait long lead times.

Paul Brown, commercial director at RVS, said: “We introduced RediTruck for exactly this purpose. We come across a lot of companies who need to react quickly to changes in demand or they suddenly need to replace vehicles in their fleet, and they can’t afford to wait for a vehicle.”

Andrew Crawford of Crawfords added: “We usually purchase vehicles direct from the manufacturer but have to wait for 6 months or more. Following our experience with RVS we won’t hesitate to go back to them in future. Everything has been spot on.”
