Peter Hathaway becomes head of Nordic Recycling

Peter Hathaway started work this week as managing director of Nordic Recycling based at the company's head office in Rochester, Kent.

A former commercial director of SITA UK and general manager at Biffa, Mr Hathaway was appointed from June 1 2009 and joins from waste group Reconomy. He succeeds Colin Price who is stepping down from the post. Mr Price, who was a significant shareholder in the company when it was sold recently to Forth Ports, said he was intending to a “gap year” away from the industry.

Nordic is part of Forth Ports which imports paper supplies into the UK. Nordic itself is increasing its role in the recycling sector. In particular, since July 2007 it has been involved with its new £5 million materials recycling facility in Tilbury Docks, Essex. The plant was developed for Holmen Recycle (Paper Mills) on a design, build, and operate contract by Nordic Recycling.

More recently the company has expanded its baling facilities at Chatham to serve the export market handling about about 150,000 tonnes of material a year.

And, Mr Hathaway is expected to be keen to develop the company's expanding waste management side.

Mr Price said: “I have been pleased to see the growth of Nordic over the years and it will enjoy further growth in prosperity under Peter in the future.”

Reconomy

Prior to joining Nordic, Mr Hathaway was operations director for Reconomy which is owned by the Englefield investment group. Reconomy made 11 acquisitions and Mr Hathaway was involved in a number of these, such as Oakley Waste Management in Corby and Alibone Recycling in Northampton.

Mr Hathaway joined SITA UK from Biffa as its new regional director for the south east in 2001 and played a major role in integrating the SITA and United Waste businesses in the south east. He was previously general manager at Biffa having joined as a depot manager in 1993 and he played an instrumental part in integrating UK Waste with Biffa's business following the purchase of the company in 2000.
