Aimed at those already working in the wastes management industry, the module “The Politics of Waste” will cover topics including the art of lobbying, wastes politics in the international arena and the development of wastes policy.
The module will be included in a number of UCN’s distance learning courses run from its SITA Centre for Sustainable Wastes Management. As part of the module students will also have the opportunity to visit the House of Commons and see how and where wastes policy is developed.
Revealing his approval, environment minister Elliott Morley said a unique collaboration between UCN and the Parliamentary Sustainable Waste Group in developing the course would “provide students with real insight into the workings of Westminster”.
Mr Morley said: “We are keen to raise the standards of wastes management education in industry. I believe that flexible learning of the kind offered by University College Northampton, where people continue their studies while working, will play an increasingly important role.”
MBA
The new module will be included in the MBA in Wastes Management, which begins in September, and the distance learning MSc in Wastes Management under development for next year.
Dr Frank Burdett, pro rector for research and business development at UCN, said: “As a result of this course, the wastes management industry will benefit from a more skilled, educated work force with an understanding of the political framework in which they operate.”
The SITA Centre was set up in 2001, backed by funding from the SITA Environmental Trust, through the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme. The development of the MBA and MSc courses form part of the Trust’s 1.5 million support programme over five years.
