Oswestry disposal contract out to tender

Oswestry borough council in Shropshire is about to go out to tender on a short-term municipal waste disposal contract to last until 2007.

The news follows the decision to “shelve” plans for an integrated collection and disposal contract which had been developed alongside Shropshire county council.

Waste Recycling Group, which currently runs a household waste recycling centre in Oswestry, was made the preferred bidder to carry out the integrated plan this summer. But the idea drew to a halt after a planning application for a new waste transfer station and vehicle operating depot in Oswestry was withdrawn.

New

The new disposal contract will go out to tender in October 2003. It will start in April 2004 and run until January 2007 and combine the running of a household waste site and the disposal of residual waste from the site and throughout the district. Last year Oswestry produced almost 25,000 tonnes municipal waste.

After 2007, Oswestry's waste disposal will be carried out under a joint integrated contract currently being developed by the Shropshire Waste Partnership, which also includes Shropshire county council and Bridgnorth, North Shropshire and South Shropshire district councils.

Application

Waste management officer for Shropshire county council Steve Burdis said a planning application for a new integrated transfer station and household waste recycling centre in Oswestry may be resubmitted in Spring 2004 if a new site is found. The councils are currently searching for suitable sites.

Oswestry's waste collections will continue to be carried out by Oswestry borough council's in-house team until 2007, when the new Shropshire Waste Partnership contract, which is yet to be awarded, will take over.
