OPINION: ‘The transformative power of prison recycling workshops’

Simon Pearson, account manager at Bakers Environmental Solutions, explains how he came to be involved in the Inside Out Academy and how beneficial it is for society and the waste sector.

Over the past 15 years, I have worked in a range of roles, from metal recycling to business-to-business waste management. My journey through yards, transport logistics, commodities, new business and now account management with Bakers Environmental Solutions has given me a comprehensive understanding of the industry’s potential. However, one of the most fulfilling experiences has been my involvement in our Inside Out Academy.

My family ties to recycling sparked my interest early on, but the industry’s ever-evolving challenges are what cemented my passion. This dynamic environment parallels the unique nature of working in prisons, where each day presents a new opportunity to make a meaningful impact. The Inside Out Academy has become a platform where I can combine my love for the industry with my commitment to helping individuals rebuild their lives.

Mutual benefit

Prison systems, often under immense strain, strive to provide education and retraining for inmates. Yet, they need external support to expand these efforts effectively. This is where the recycling industry, with its vast potential for growth and demand for new talent, becomes a perfect partner. The academy model we have developed is designed to equip prisoners with the knowledge and hands-on experience necessary for employment upon release.

The workshops foster a community atmosphere by treating inmates. This approach not only earns their respect but also creates a conducive environment for learning and personal growth. The relationship benefits both parties; inmates gain valuable skills and a sense of purpose, while the industry is able to tap into a talent pool of motivated individuals eager to contribute.

The personal gratification from helping someone turn their life around is indescribable. Each success story, each individual who leaves prison better prepared for their future, reaffirms the importance of our work. With waste and recycling needs large across industries and the UK, the scope for engagement and growth is vast.

‘More than just an initiative’

Every business in the country – in fact, the world – has waste or recycling to deal with, no matter how big or small. This universal aspect means any company can participate and make a meaningful contribution, and we can develop a wide array of potential projects and training programmes. I envision creating model waste management sites in every prison, replicating the operations of external recycling yards. This approach would provide inmates with hands-on experience and a clear understanding of industry practices, ensuring they are well-prepared and work-ready upon release.

The integration of relevant educational programmes within prisons is also crucial, and we’re working hard behind the scenes to introduce this for the Inside Out Academy. These programmes should be able to offer certifications that hold real value in the recycling industry and workplace, effectively bridging the gap between prison and employment.

These recycling workshops are more than just an initiative – they are a transformative movement. They symbolise hope, redemption, and the possibility of a second chance. By leveraging the recycling industry’s resources and expertise, we can create a sustainable, mutually beneficial system that not only addresses environmental challenges but also reintegrates individuals into society as productive, confident members and that fills skills gaps in our industry and beyond.
