Obituary: Tony Dickens, GBN Services

Tribute has been paid to Tony Dickens, the director of London skip-hire and waste management business GBN Services, who passed away after a two-year battle with cancer.

Mr Dickens, who passed away on January 7 aged 58, leaves behind his wife of more than 35-years, Kerry, two daughters and three grandchildren.

Born in Enfield, he has worked in the London waste management industry for over three decades, first through his father in law’s business – NSM in Southgate – and later GBN, which acquired the NSM business in 2005.

Tony helped to push the company through a period of sustained growth, which has seen the company expand to operate seven depots across north and east London, and the wider south east.

Speaking to letsrecycle.com, his daughter Hailey, who has followed in her father’s footsteps to work for GBN alongside her sister Amy, described him as passionate about working in the waste industry.

Hailey said: “He loved it. As a child I used to go in with him on a Saturday morning, and he was so passionate about it.”

She also described his dedication to the business, continuing to work through his illness as well as his devotion to his family.

“He loved his grandchildren and he was always smiling, and loved a joke and a laugh,” she added.

Outside of work he was a keen supporter of Tottenham Hotspur, and passionate about cars – having bought and restored a Ford ‘Pop’ vehicle in his spare time.
