BMRA members raise £42,000 for charity

The British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) has thanked its members for raising £41,913.45 for the Alzheimer’s Society in 2023.

Alzheimer’s Society’s community fundraiser, Cambs, Suffolk and Norfolk, Natalie Skipper (far left) joined BMRA Board members to celebrate the milestone total members raised for the charity.

The money was raised through raffles and donations at BMRA’s Golf Day and Annual Dinner as well as its photography competition prize donations.

Susie Burrage OBE said: “In recent years, we’ve been delighted by the generosity of our members who participate in our fundraising activities, especially when both individuals and businesses have been challenged by rising cost.

“The amount raised for Alzheimer’s Society has astonished us, and we are extremely grateful to our members for their generosity and support. This money will enable Alzheimer’s Society to make a real difference to people living with dementia, along with the research it funds to understand the causes, develop effective treatments, improve care and hopefully find a cure.”

Global Recycling Foundation issues warning to steel industry

The iron and steel industry stands as the foremost consumer of coal globally

The Global Recycling Foundation (GRF) has warned that the world iron and steel-making industry must decarbonise as part of the race to achieve net-zero emissions.

It has urged policy makers to adopt laws and technologies to make the sector greener and more circular globally.

The GRF said iron and steel industry is the foremost consumer of coal globally, emitting the largest volume of CO2 and ranking second in energy consumption among heavy industries. Its carbon dioxide emissions range between 7-9% of the global total, surpassing those from all road freight combined.

GRF founding president, Ranjit Baxi, said: “This represents a significant challenge. But it also provides a huge opportunity to re-set the world’s iron and steel value chains on a more sustainable path.”

“Our call resonates with the ambition of COP28 to accelerate energy transition when it unveiled the Global Decarbonisation Accelerator (GDA), a series of landmark initiatives designed to speed up the energy transition and drastically reduce global emissions. As COP28 President HE Dr Sultan Al Jaber said, the GDA adds up to more countries and more companies from more sectors than ever before, in the drive towards the goal of 1.5C.”

Giant recycling rainbow unveiled by Every Can Counts

Pupils from the college also visited Every Can Counts’ Dublin warehouse earlier this month to learn more about the construction of the rainbow

As part of its efforts to boost recycling, the not for profit Every Can Counts has announced it is due to unveil a giant rainbow installation made from over 1,500 recycled cans.

The installation with cans collected by 16 transition year students at Loreto college in Dublin and from donations from local recycling centres: Rathmines Bring centre and Windmill Road Civic Amenity centre.

Jackie Dempsey, principal at Loreto College, said: “We couldn’t be prouder of our transition year pupils and their support of Every Can Counts’ installation at the St Patrick’s Festival this year.

“After spending several months collecting cans from all over Dublin, it’s great to see their hard work come to fruition in the form of the giant rainbow. The installation is not only eye catching but also a great reminder of the importance of recycling and the positive impact it has on our local community.”

Cuplotto scheme launched by Co-cre8 and Peasy

Co-cre8 in partnership with Peasy has announced it has launched a ‘cup lottery’ for the UK.

Peter Goodwin managing director and co-founder of co-cre8, and Georgia Bell, sales and marketing manager, co-cre8.

Co-cre8 was founded in 2019 by James Capel and Peter Goodwin to ‘create commercially viable solutions’ for reuse and recycling. It does this by designing systems and infrastructure to facilitate recycling.

The scheme named CupLotto encourages consumers to recycle used paper cups throughout the UK. In return for binning their cup at participating outlets, users can enter the free CupLotto prize draw to win regular spot prizes and a weekly jackpot of £1,000.

Peter Goodwin, managing director and co-founder of co-cre8 said: “Paper cup recycling initiatives have been around for more than a decade yet the vast majority of consumers still don’t know whether used paper cups can be recycled or have sufficient access to simple and easy to use cup collection units to recycle them.

“CupLotto will build on the success of our existing, proven collection system by being the first cup recycling campaign that financially incentivises consumers to put their used cup in the right bin.”
