News in Brief

Defra money still up for grabs

Defra has reminded local authorities that they have until close of play on Monday, August 2, to submit a proposal for waste consultancy support of up to 20,000.

The guidance notes and information is available from the Waste Implementation Programme's local authority support website: lasupport.defra.gov.uk under the heading “Guidance on Direct Support”.

Applications are to be submitted by email to: colm.quinn@defra.gsi.gov.uk. Defra said that all it requires at this stage is for councils to fill in the basic outline project proposal form at the end of the guidance notes.

Authorities should also provide a projection for their recycling and composting rate for 2005/06 in percentage form. Without these projections Defra will not be able to evaluate proposals properly, and your bid may be prejudiced.

Glastonbury Festival doubles recycling rate

New figures released this week show that this year's Glastonbury Festival was the greenest on record with more than 150 tonnes of waste recycled.

The amount of waste recycled was more than double the 2003 total of 60 tonnes. This year's event recycled 27 tonnes of cans and plastic, 13 tonnes of card as well as 10 tonnes of glass that was confiscated at the gate. The festival also composted 100 tonnes of food waste.

The festival's sponsor, Budweiser, provided an “army” of litter pickers as well as colour-coded recycling bins for the festival. The company said the festival's recycling programme helped to safeguard the future of the Glastonbury event.

Randall Blackford, Budweiser's UK marketing director said: “We are proud to support Glastonbury's recycling initiatives. These fantastic recycling figures show that people are as committed to protecting the future of the event as they are to enjoying themselves at one of the UK's best music festivals.”

Viridor secures 70 million recycling and waste contract

Viridor Waste Management has secured a long-term waste and recycling contract with Southern Water.

Under the contract, worth 70 million, Viridor will provide collection, transport, recycling and disposal services to Southern Water, for operational sites across Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

The contract ensures the safe and efficient handling of approximately one million tonnes of materials each year from water and wastewater treatment plants and support facilities.

Martin Fennell, General Manager of Viridor’s Thames Region, said: “We are very pleased to have reached agreement with Southern Water and look forward to providing them with a high level of service over the coming years.”

The training programme has been developed to support recycling managers in improving existing recycling schemes and introducing new collection initiatives. Three-day courses are aimed at local authorities, the community and private sectors throughout the UK who manage or develop and promote collections of recyclable or compostable materials.
