NLWA holding conference to address waste prevention
North London Waste Authority (NLWA) is holding the North London Waste Exchange in order to discuss how behaviour change can be achieved through waste prevention initiatives.
The event, which will be held on February 15 at the Inmarsat Conference Centre, London, will focus on waste prevention initiatives in order to decouple the link between economic activity and waste production.
Chair of NLWA, councillor Clyde Loakes said: “The population in north London is currently growing at a rate of 1.15% per annum and the dwelling stock is increasing by just under 0.8% per annum. With an ever rising population and with waste on the increase, we have got to look at how we engage with people to prevent waste in the first instance, in order to combat the environmental impact caused by waste.

Grundon goes carbon neutral with its refuse and recycling sacks
Grundon Waste Management has switched to a carbon neutral bio-based polythene solution for its refuse and recycling sacks.
Supplied by Polythene UK, the Polyair sacks are a bio-based polythene developed using sugarcane polymers that are created from the waste product of sugarcane extraction. The carbon neutral aspect of Polyair comes from the natural process of photosynthesis during the growth of the sugarcane, the company said.
The change to Polyair bags is part of Grundon’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. John Stephens, group logistics manager for Grundon, said: “At Grundon we are always looking for initiatives that mitigate the environmental impacts of our operations, especially those that offer carbon reduction benefits.
“For our customers, seeing Grundon using innovative and environmentally friendly products such as the Polyair carbon neutral refuse and recycling sacks and having a CarbonNeutral vehicle fleet is a reassurance.”
Grundon has been operating a certified CarbonNeutral vehicle fleet since January 2014.

Keenan Recycling teams up with Arrow Oils to launch oil collection initiative
Food waste management company, Keenan Recycling, has launched a free oil collection service in a bid to help food businesses reduce waste.
Keenan has teamed up with Arrow Oils to launch the initiative, which will see oil collected from takeaways, restaurant and large catering organisations. Arrow will collect the leftover oil from kitchens and ensure it is filtered and cleaned before it is sent on to be converted into biodiesel.
Meanwhile Keenan will continue to collect food waste from businesses. Grant Keenan, managing director at Keenan Recycling, said: “New rules were introduced on 1 January that mean every business in Scotland that’s producing more than 5kg of food waste needs to separate out those leftover scraps and recycle them instead of dumping them into landfill.
“By teaming up with Arrow Oils, we’re giving our customers the chance to have their food waste and leftover oil collected under the same contract, making it simpler and easier for them.”
Keenan Recycling launched its commercial food waste collection service in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire in 2010 and now processes more than 60,000 tonnes of waste each year.
