Powerday, which has sponsored the Association since 2011, has launched the Boxers’ Bursary Scheme, which will make annual awards to support the next generation of London’s talent.

The scheme provides training, qualifications and jobs to young London ABA boxers in the waste and construction industries – with 92 individuals already placed in long term employment.

Professional boxer George Groves attended the launch event, which took place at the company’s Old Oak Sidings headquarters.

The inaugural awards saw eight applicants receive bursaries along with clothing and kit supplied by O’Neills.

Powerday chairman Mick Crossan said: “This scheme is part of our community seeking to help young people realise their potential in an Olympic sport, which through their clubs provides them with so many positive messages and lessons for life.”

ACE UK appoints Printwaste Recycling

Cheltenham-based Printwaste has taken over the collection service for ACE UK’s beverage carton bring banks across England, Scotland and Wales.

Cartons collected via the service will continue to be recycled at ACE UK’s carton recycling facility in Stainland, West Yorkshire.

Commenting on the contract award, Fay Dashper, senior recycling manager at ACE UK, said: “We have been working with Printwaste on other areas of our business for nearly a decade and have built up an excellent working relationship with the company.

“When our existing contractor decided to discontinue this service, following changes to its core business model, Printwaste seemed like the obvious choice. We are very pleased to have them on board.”

Geof Robins, operations director of Printwaste, added: “We were delighted to have been awarded these contracts. As a recycling-led waste management company already working with a number of local authorities the contract is a great fit for our business. ”

Scottish waste regulations boost Keenan Recycling

Organics recycling firm Keenan Recycling claims it has seen its customer base ‘triple’ since the introduction of new food waste recycling regulations affecting businesses across Scotland.

Keenan Recycling, which is based at New Deer in Aberdeenshire, has seen its client list rise from 600 to 1,800, and now collects more than 60,000 tonnes of organic waste, due to the Waste (Scotland) Regulations, which came into force in January 2014.

The regulations require businesses producing more than 50kg of food waste per week to recycle it or face a penalty. By January 2016, any businesses producing more than just 5kg of food waste per week will need to recycle it.

Keenan Recycling, managing director, Grant Keenan, said: “2014 was an incredible year for us with our business doubling in size almost overnight as a result of the new Waste (Scotland) Regulations coming into force.

“As we draw closer to the deadlines in 2016 we expect to continue to grow and strengthen our position in the industry.”

Scottish Young Recycler of the Year named

Viridor employee Katie Ferrie has been named as Scottish Young Recycler of the Year at the Scottish Government’s Scottish Resource Awards.

A graduate of Glasgow Caledonian University, Ms Ferrie is employed at Viridor’s Scottish headquarters at EuroCentral, Lanarkshire, as Scottish strategic sales delivery manager.

Ms Ferrie beat off competition from young recycling, resources and waste managers from across the public and private sectors to achieve the award in recognition of her contribution to Scotland’s green economy.

Ms Ferrie said: “Having studied Environmental Management and Planning at GCU, I’ve been living and breathing the green energy sector for quite some time. I am incredibly thankful to have won this award because it’s my passion. I love my job and to get a reward like this really means a lot.”

Constituency MP Frank Roy added: “Katie is a credit to her community and has set a high standard for others to follow.”

WasteCare will seek to manufacture upwards of 1,500 appliances a week – focusing on white goods such as cookers, fridges, freezers and washing machines.

The firm also plans to licence the Colchester site as a Regional Service Centre serving East Anglia and the South East of England.

Following the recent acquisition, WasteCare Group chairman Peter Hunt said: “This opportunity has enabled us to further expand in the SE. We are very impressed with the commitment and support of the current 42 staff and we are already planning for further growth in the coming months.”
