New websites aim to open up ELV information

The metal recycling industry has set up two new websites to provide accurate information on ELV regulations – one for the industry and one for consumers.

Developed over the last two years by End-of-Life-Vehicle Information Systems, a joint venture between European Metal Recycling and Simsmetal UK, www.ELV-IS.net is backed by a growing number of metal recyclers, dismantlers and salvage operators. According to developers, it has the potential to gather and manage complete compliance information relating to about 55% of all vehicles scrapped in the UK.

Jeremy Sutcliffe, group chief executive of Simsmetal, said: “ELV-IS.net opens up the possibility that automotive companies could receive aggregated evidence of compliance, without having to enter into many hundreds of individual contracts.”

He added: “ELV-IS.net, as an industry-led solution, will easily offer the motor industry the least-cost means of data management. But it also gives even the smallest treatment facilities the security of being able to sell their compliance information through the largest data provider.”

Bringing the cost savings of internet commerce to the vehicle recycling chain, ELV-IS.net has no joining fees and no complicated paperwork. It aims to be easy to use and promises secure computer entry and full technical support.

Competitive market

David Hulse, director general of the British Metals Association, doesn't believe the website will provide an exclusive service, however. He said: “It is hoped that ELV-IS.net will help to supply important compliance data to help meet the UK's reporting obligations, but it would be unrealistic to assume it will be the only scheme.”

However, according to Colin Iles, Managing Director of EMR, a competitive market for the provision of information will ensure compliance schemes deliver value for money. He said: “We're working hard to ensure ELV-IS.net fully meets the needs of vehicle manufacturers and the recycling industry – and we welcome the competition.”

Alongside the launch of ELV-IS.net, End-of-Life Vehicle Information Systems has also unveiled a website targeting consumers. Called www.car-recycling.co.uk, the site shows members of the public where to find approved local facilities to dispose of unwanted vehicles, explains the process and provides links to authorised dismantlers, recyclers and salvage facilities.

This website will be promoted through an extensive consumer awareness campaign.
