New Onyx chief for UK and Ireland

Onyx has appointed a new chief executive to handle its UK and Ireland operations following the promotion of Michel Gourvennec to the deputy chief's role for the company's worldwide operations based in Paris. Onxy has a large number of local authority and industry waste and recycling contracts in the UK, most notably for Hampshire.

Mr Gourvennec (pictured) is expected to leave his current /photos/michelonyx.jpg
post as chief executive of the Onyx Environmental Group – which includes parts of northern Europe as well as the UK and Ireland – by the end of the year. He will be replaced by Cyrille du Peloux who comes from outside the industry and is currently undertaking an intensive programme to get to known Onyx UK's activities as well learning more about the parent company.

The appointment of Mr Peloux, 48, comes as Onyx is developing its work on the Sheffield integrated waste management contract and works to secure the contract for the East Sussex and Brighton work for which it is preferred bidder.

Marathon runner
Mr Peloux previously worked for the IT business Bull where he was appinted deputy director general in March 1999. He was involved with the creation of a services division within Bull only to leave this Bull division in December last year. An engineer by training, Mr Peloux who was born in Saint-Etienne, has experience in the TV industry as well as working for the French Ministry of Industry. He is also a marathon runner.

Onyx has said relatively little about the new appointment and whether or not there will be any other changes within the UK business. It is thought that should the contract for East Sussex be confirmed this may prompt some reorganisation of the management structure within its southern operations.
