Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and Avon Fire and Rescue were called to the facility to reports of a blaze at a warehouse on the site at around 6am.

At its height, over 50 firefighters and 11 appliances were involved in efforts to combat the fire. The fire services managed to bring the fire under control late in the afternoon.

A crew remained on-site throughout Saturday dampening the remaining hotspots, before handing responsibility back over to the owners at 6pm.

According to Gloucestershire Fire and Resource Service: “Structural integrity of the roof and internal solid walls was a concern for firefighter safety, so were able to use an aerial appliance to reach the hotspots.”

The fire is not being treated as suspicious, the Fire Service said, but an investigation into potential causes is ongoing.

Based at Sharpness near Gloucester, New Earth purchased the 48,000 tonnes-per-year IVC plant from administrators in February 2009 after previous owner Bioganix went into administration.

The plant has since been acquired by Irish recycling company Panda Waste, which purchased the New Earth sites when it too entered administration in the summer. It continues to trade under the same name.
