Merseyside approves waste management strategy

Councillors in Merseyside have approved a 25-year joint municipal waste management strategy.

The approval came in a meeting held on Friday. The new strategy will help lay the foundations for a multi-billion pound waste contract for 2008, for which Merseyside is in the early stages of the procurement process.

Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority has led the way on the contract, which will provide services for households in Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and the Wirral.

Colette Gill, spokesperson for the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority, said that it would be looking to secure Private Finance Initiative funding for the contract.

Exciting
Ms Gill said: “It is a very exciting time for the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority and the five authorities. The facilities that we will be looking for in the new contract are very different to those that would have been part of the previous contract.

“Obviously landfill is no longer the predominant option so we will be expecting some new technologies in the area. An in-vessel composter is already on its way at the Wirral and another one is expected in Liverpool,” she added.

The waste strategy has set out a long term target of achieving a recycling rate of 40% by the year 2020. Shorter term goals have been set in between for 2005, 2010 and 2015.
