Market Development Network appoints new co-ordinator

Waste and Resources Action Programme has appointed Katherine Gorbing as co-ordinator for the UK Market Development Network (MDN).

Member organisations of the MDN are all involved in encouraging and providing support for markets for recyclable materials from both local authority and commercial waste streams. They include the Clean Merseyside Centre, Urban Mines, Enviros, WRAP, the Wales Environmental Trust, Hampshire county council and the various ReMaDes.

The MDN aims to co-ordinate and promote the members' activities and exchange best practice and research results.

Ms Gorbing has been establishing and handling organisational networks for 15 years including the West Midlands Environment Network and the Environmental Law Foundation. Her new position involves strengthening the MDN and extending the links between regional members and WRAP.

Melvin Caton, chairman of the MDN and chief executive of ReMaDe Essex, said: “UK MDN members carry out important work in developing markets for recyclable materials and the network exists to ensure an integrated approach and the effective dissemination of information, results and best practice. We welcome Katherine's appointment, as its will ensure that the network functions more holistically and works more closely with WRAP towards our common goal.”

  • WRAP published its report this week on the recycling of glass in fluorescent lamps. The interim report (see letsrecycle.com story), found that the mercury glass from the tubes could be recycled into new lamps. However, it also found that the lead accumulated during the re-melting process in the furnace, emissions and in the recycled end product. It final report says that these problems can be solved by removing the ends of the glass tubes in which the lead is concentrated.
