Major upgrade for Luton&#39s waste after 1.8m injection

Major new improvements are being unveiled in the borough of Luton this month which the council hopes will help increase its recycling yields.

The upgrading follows the council making 1.8 million available specifically for upgrading site infrastructure in Luton.

”This partnership has achieved a great deal in a relatively short period of time “
– Mick Wright, Luton borough council

As part of the changes Eaton Green Road civic amenity site and Kingsway waste transfer station have already had redevelopments completed by the waste management company Waste Recycling Group. WRG is a year through its twelve-year contract to provide integrated waste management services on behalf of Luton borough council.

Explaining the improvements made to the Eaton Green site, Kully Birring, Luton's waste disposal officer, said: “The site is now much more user-friendly. Time spent on site by visiting public has been reduced to a minimum, eliminating vehicle queues and waiting times which were becoming regular issues.

“The site design has made the recycling and recovery of waste much easier. In one year, WRG has increased the site's recycling rate from 20% to over 60%,” he added.

Accessible

At the Kingsway site, more than 1 million has been invested in the refurbishment of the waste transfer station and the development of a new materials recycling facility with an initial capacity of 25,000 tonnes of recyclables a year.

Trevor Smart, WRG contract manager, said: “These developments have contributed significantly to providing the people of Luton with more accessible, convenient and user-friendly waste disposal and recycling facilities.

The recent changes follow the completion in August last of a new civic amenity site in Progress Way, which was also designed, constructed and managed by WRG.
