Major DIY retailer backs Compost Awareness Week

The Compost Association has joined forces with a major DIY retailer for this year's Compost Awareness Week.

The week's events promoting compost and composting to the public will run from May 2-8 under the slogan: &#39Be; Resourceful…Compost!'

The week will coincide with International Composting Awareness Week with compost and composting promotional events being held across Canada, the USA and Europe.

During the week, the UK's second largest DIY retailer, FOCUS will provide in-store information to promote compost and composting to its customers during Compost Awareness Week.

Joanne Hirst, environment manager at FOCUS, said: “Raising awareness of the benefits associated with composting and soil-improving composts is an essential part of our drive to promote sustainable gardening in the UK. We are very pleased to be working with the Composting Association to help promote Compost Awareness week to all our customers.”

Last year's Compost Awareness Week saw over 230 events taking place across the UK. This year events will include composting equipment sales, compost promotions, community composting workshops and launches by local authorities of home composting initiatives.

Commenting on the week, the chief executive of the Composting Association, Dr Jane Gilbert, said: “Awareness about the many beneficial properties of making and using composts is rising at all levels across the UK, from local authority parks departments to individual gardeners, composts are becoming an integral part of our drive towards sustainability.”

She added: “This year, by working with FOCUS we hope to help raise awareness amongst consumers and the retail sector as a whole.”
