Liverpool unveils ‘UK first’ CNG refuse trucks

VIDEO REPORT: Liverpool city council has unveiled what it describes as the UK’s first eco-friendly fleet of refuse vehicles.

Joe Anderson, Mayor of Liverpool (C) with Wendy Simon, Deputy Mayor of Liverpool (L) and Cllr Sharon Connor (R) pose with city council staff alongside two of Liverpool city council's refuse vehicles. Picture: Jennifer Bruce/Liverpool City Council.

Powered by biomethane, a Compressed Natural Gas, the council said its 20 strong fleet – costing £3.4 million –  will help to “radically cut” its carbon footprint.

The vehicles each have a Mercedes-Benz Econic chassis with Faun Zoeller Variopress body, a load capacity of up to 10.5 tonnes and a rear steering axle to easily manoeuvre narrow streets.

The council added that crews will also have improved working conditions with less noise, vibration and air pollution. They also have “low cab entry and various features making them safer and easier to use”.
