Lincoln launches 200,000 green waste collection service

Lincoln city council has launched a 200,000 green waste collection service as a key part of its bid to reach a 20% recycling rate.

The service will see 14,000 householders – about a third of the city – given green wheeled bins by July 18, with collections then occurring fortnightly.

As well as the wheeled bins, which have been provided by Schaeffer, householders will also receive a calendar showing all the collection dates for the following twelve months and information on what kind of waste can go into the bins.

Lincoln currently recycles about 11%, but is looking to reach 20% in the short term. The new green waste service comes in addition to a three-weekly kerbside recycling service in the city, which collects a variety of materials. It is thought at least 3,000 tonnes of material will be collected every year.

Barrie Billinghay, environmental promotion officer at Lincoln city council explained: “Currently we don't collect garden waste, but during the summer months nearly 80% of the waste we collect is garden waste – so this will be a really significant step.”

The new collections will be run by Cory Environmental, the contractor that operates the city's waste and recycling collection services. Cory will take on two new vehicles for the service, provided by Jack Allen Ltd.

Cory's Paul Redman said: “We are very pleased to work with Lincoln City Council to introduce this new service. It will help Lincoln increase their rate of recycling and will mean less waste going to landfill.”

Lincoln council is also aiming to expand its home composting drive by offering residents the chance to try a home composter free for three months.
