Seventy firefighters battled a blaze involving around 100 tonnes of household waste inside an open fronted warehouse at the site on Sunday night (see letsrecycle.com story).
No-one was hurt and the household waste recycling centre (HWRC) has remained closed since.
A spokesperson for the London borough of Richmond upon Thames told letsrecycle.com yesterday (24 June): “Townmead Road will remain closed until further notice while the council clears the site, determines any damage done and ensures it is fully safe.
“The council has confirmed it will definitely not reopen before the weekend, but an exact reopening day is still unconfirmed.
“Richmond upon Thames residents are encouraged to wait until the site reopens to dispose of their waste, but if it is urgent, they are able to book a slot and Hounslow or Brent’s reuse and recycling centres using those councils’ online booking systems.”
The fire is believed to have started accidentally, but London Fire Brigade has recorded the exact cause as undetermined.
Fire
London Fire Brigade says its control office took 16 calls about the fire, the first of which it received at 8.43pm.
Though the fire was under control by 11.34pm, firefighters remained at the scene throughout the night to dampen down the area.
Fire crews from Richmond, Heston, Chiswick, Hammersmith, Wandsworth and other surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
