IWM looking for huge member support for chartered status

The Institute of Waste Management is moving closer to its long awaited aim of gaining chartered status with knock-on benefits for members.

Mike Philpott, IWM chief executive officer has told members that an extraordinary general meeting in Northampton at the end of the month will be one of the most important meeting’s in the Institute’s long history.

At the meeting Mr Philpott is hoping for overwhelming support for chartered status.

If members agree a formal submission will go to the Privy Council and the Institute could gain the status next year.
Mr Philpott has singled our four key benefits in achieving chartered status.

One is that it confirms waste managers as being professional. “It is generally understood that to be a chartered professional is the recognition of a point in time in the developmental process which sets a quality standard for all individual engaged in the profession,” he commented.

A second reason is that chartered status will give managers more recognition under European rules when working on the continent.

Third, is that the institute generally has all the attributes expected of a chartered body including a formal membership structure and training programme.

The final reason is that in the international context the status of waste managers will be raised.
