The Institute will in the future be known as the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management and will eventually have a new website at www.ciwm.org.uk.
Achieving chartered status “is a supreme accolade for a professional body”, a spokeswoman for the IWM said. “The Queen grants a charter using her Royal Prerogative after taking advice from her ministers and Privy Council. The decision means that the IWM are now recognised as being the pre-eminent professional body in the field of solid waste management, and supports their role in delivering good practice and promoting high standards, for the benefit of the nation.”
As CIWM members, professional waste managers will now find it easier to move around Europe for work. This is because they will gain official recognition under the EU regulations governing professional qualifications.
The IWM says that chartered status is also an important step in providing professional recognition for waste managers operating in the UK.
“The waste industry as a whole is currently in a state of flux and it is acknowledged that successful implementation of European Directives will bring dynamic changes to current waste management practices. The national waste strategy is currently undergoing review, and waste and its management is increasingly emerging as a subject of political, economic and social interest and concern.”
