The company, which already runs a large MRF at Crayford in Kent, will make improvements to the Peterborough MRF as part of a 480,000 upgrade of the facility in Fourth Drove, Fengate.
- Note (October 3): Peterborough city council has said the decision to award Grosvenor Waste Management the contract to run Peterborough’s materials recycling facility needs to be ratified under the council’s Decision Notice process. This is likely to take about four weeks.
” This deal will provide us with a 'next generation' MRF capable of achieving the council’s long-term objectives.“
– Paul Pace, Peterborough CC
Peterborough city council said the efficiency of the plant will be improved with the installation of new equipment next year. This will include machinery to increase the sorting process, regulate the flow of material and help separate different types of material.
The upgrade of the MRF is to allow Peterborough to extend its doorstep collection of recyclables to include glass containers during 2006.
Paul Pace, head of environmental management at Peterborough city council, said: “Grosvenor has extensive experience in designing plant that performs to very exacting specifications to produce excellent quality materials for manufacturers. This deal will provide us with a 'next generation' MRF capable of achieving the council’s long-term objectives for sustainable recycling.”
Grosvenor will be taking over the running of the Peterborough MRF from HW Martin. One of the first MRFs to begin operations in the UK, the plant was formerly run by waste firm Shanks.

Grosvenor opened its own MRF at Crayford, near Dartford in Kent, in September 2003. The facility now operates as the UK’s largest MRF, diverting about 500,000 tonnes of material from landfill each year.
This year has seen the company involved in debate concerning the quality of recyclable material being exported from the UK.
