The “Have You Got the Bottle?” campaign is being led by development organisations Recycling Action Yorkshire (RAY), Envirolink and Renew Tees Valley, and will be launched in April.
With thousands of tonnes of usable glass still going to landfill, next month's campaign will urge licensed premises to get recycling |
It will aim to get the recycling message out to 17,000 licensed retail establishments in more than 30 towns and cities across the region.
The campaign, sponsored by WRAP, aims to divert some of the 600,000 tonnes of waste glass currently going to landfill in the UK.
The three lead organisations held a seminar in Wakefield, Yorkshire, last month where 15 recycling organisations and local authorities pledged support for the programme.
But the campaign organisers are still interested in any other organisations in the glass recycling sector that might want to take part in the scheme.
Encouraging
Group spokesman Ben Stone said: “We had a really encouraging response. It produced some stimulating and lively discussion about the issues facing glass recyclers targeting the hospitality industry. We were also very pleased that so many pledged their support.
He added: “But, we know there are still more glass recyclers out there and this is why we are putting the call out to all waste management organisations in the north of England to get in touch and find out more. The more companies that sign up, the stronger and more effective the initiative will be.”
The campaign will use direct mail, a dedicated website, media relations and other marketing techniques, to educate the hospitality industry on the cost savings and environmental benefits of recycling more of their waste glass.

It also hopes to raise awareness and accessibility of the recycling collection services available across the north of England.
