Glass companies give recycling publicity a push

Glass collector Glass Recycling UK and bottle maker Rexam Glass have launched a range of publicity materials for councils to adapt and use in local campaigns.

The pair have invested around 50,000 of PRN funds in the specially designed marketing materials and a new website which explains the recycling process.

Director of Rexam Glass Nigel Pritchard said: “We will provide publicity materials and help councils on how to manage a campaign and drive it out in terms of public awareness.”

The publicity materials are intended to help councils run public awareness campaigns by taking care of campaign design. Rexam and Glass Recycling, which are both based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, are also offering to advise councils on implementing campaigns or even take over whole campaign management.

Mr Pritchard said: “Councils can buy these materials at a significantly lower cost than they would if they went to a design agency – about 2/3 lower. But they key thing is it will save them time and we can help them with running campaigns. They can be up and running within a few days with a campaign including press releases.”

Materials

The materials include adverts, leaflets, labels and posters which can be adapted to include council logos and collections details. But they will encourage recycling of all materials, not just glass, Mr Pritchard explained. “It's about getting the public to recycle and local authorities want to champion a range of waste – glass is just part of that.”

The marketing material will be accompanied by a website about recycling, bank-it.org.uk, which will explain the glass recycling process and government targets and include case studies of recycling best practice . The website will also include all publicity material in pdf form which councils can buy online.
