Furniture manufacturers wasting money by not recycling

A new survey by Waste and Resources Action Programme – WRAP has found that only 20% of furniture manufacturers recycle their wood waste.

The survey found that of those companies who do not currently recycle, 62% had considered it. Factors affecting their behaviour included the proximity of a recycler to the business and being approached by a recycler in the first place.

The Wood Waste survey, also suggested that businesses needed more information on how to recycle and that they needed help with segregation and storage. Getting paid for waste also featured as an obvious incentive to encouraging recycling and reducing the amount of wood sent to landfill.

WRAP, who have produced a variety of guides for businesses wanting to recycle wood waste, are encouraging furniture manufacturers to see that it makes good business sense to recycle.

A previous survey by the organisation found that recycling saved money because businesses could get up to 400 for a 35 cubic yards (approx. 7 tonnes) for soft wood waste, whereas to send the same amount sent to landfill they would end up paying up to 260.

“The fact that companies can save money is highlighted in the survey as a factor which helped some respondents to start recycling,” said Liz Morrish, WRAP's materials project officer.

Wood from the companies that do currently recycle, the survey found, is used for manufacturing animal bedding, mulches and wood pellets for which, it was estimated in the previous survey, that companies could get up to 60, 10 and 20 per tonne, respectively.
