Falkirk invests 800,000 in recycling site upgrades

Recycling in Falkirk is to be made easier with 800,000 worth of upgrades commissioned for two of the council's recycling sites.

The sites – at Roughmute in Bonnybridge and Kinneil Kerse in Bo'ness – will be given a radical overhaul to include a one-way drive-through system to improve residents' access to recycling containers.

Contractor George Leslie of Barrhead has won the tender for the upgrades to the Roughmute site, while work at the Kinneil Kerse site will be carried out by Luddon Construction of Glasgow.

Both sites will have new containers, skips and banks to collect construction and building waste, green waste, wood, scrap metal, cardboard and glass. Residents will also be able to deposit waste electronics including fridges, washing machines and computers.

Cllr David Alexander, convener of the council's policy and resources committee, explained: “The new facilities will allow householders to play their part in helping to protect the environment and reduce landfill costs. The funding represents a significant investment and we are confident that it will be well used.”

The work on the sites is expected to be completed by early summer 2004. At the moment, Falkirk recycles about 9% of its waste. Under the Forth Valley Area Waste Plan drawn up under Scotland's National Waste Strategy, Falkirk council has targets to recycle and compost 25% of its household waste by 2006 and 30% by 2010.
