Qualitainer launched to boost bin safety

GJF Fabrications has launched the front end loader (FEL) version of its Qualitainer container, which it hopes will help address some of the safety concerns of people sleeping in bins as well as helping to tackle material contamination.

The FEL Qualitainer is aimed at adressing concerns over safety of sleepers in bins

In a statement, the company said: “People sleeping in bins has been a headache for waste collection contractors for over a decade; the size and accessibility of FEL containers makes them particularly vulnerable to this activity.

“The Qualitainer FEL has wide aperture mesh windows on its front and rear faces, allowing persons sleeping inside easily to be spotted by the collection crew before emptying.  The mesh windows are fully sealed by protected, transparent, highly scratch resistant Makrolon panels that prevent rain water from spoiling the contents of the FEL, and prevent the risk of arson.”

The mesh panels, explained the company, also allow contamination of the contents of the FEL container to be identified, allowing removal of the contaminants to avoid spoiling a load of recyclate in the refuse collection vehicle.

GJF’s chief executive, Dr David Gillett, said: “The Qualitainer FEL is the little brother of our Qualitainer Hooklift launched in 2016.  Both containers are designed to allow the easy identification and removal of contamination in the contents, supporting the objective of improving recyclate quality.”

Master Magnets provides mobile machine

Technological advances in Eddy Current Separation over the last 10 years have significantly improved the efficiency, recovery rates and throughput capabilities of a machine that has always been one of the recycling industry’s soundest investments, according to Master Magnets.

In an attempt to improve the practicality of the Eddy Current Separator, particularly for recycling sites that stockpile a large amount of their feed materials, Master Magnets ECS systems are now available as a mobile tracked machine.

The company’s general manager Adrian Coleman, said: “We wanted to bring a bring a mobile Eddy Current Separator to market that was not only superior in manufacturing quality to anything else on the market, but could also still be cost-effective for the end user.

“Working closely with the highly reputable Steelweld Fabrications Ltd in Cookstown has enabled us to produce a machine that is everything we had hoped for in terms of design, ease of use and durability.”

The MasterTrax incorporates a 1500mm wide Master Magnets ECS with a Rare Earth Drum Magnet for the removal of fine ferrous metals. Other features include a vibratory feeder and 3 integrated inclined discharge conveyors with hydraulic folding.

Rob Symons, Owner of CRJ Services and user of the new MasterTrax, noted: “Having purchased Master Magnets Eddy Current Separators in the past, we knew that we can trust in the quality of their manufacture and service, however the demand from our clients for a mobile ECS unit was increasing all the time. We worked closely with Master Magnets on the design brief for the ECS, before teaming up with Steelweld to turn our vision into a fully operational production machine. We were very keen to purchase the first MasterTrax unit and we now have two in our fleet.”

LSS puts cycle safety first in Leeds

LSS Waste Management, the Leeds-based waste solutions provider, has reported that it is putting cyclist safety first by investing and fitting fellow Leeds company, SM UK’s Halo system on its two biggest trucks.

The company has also committed to fit it to all new trucks, including ten on order for delivery this autumn, with the system.

The £3,000 system consists of four ultrasonic sensors mounted to the vehicle’s near side, which are activated when a bicycle enters their detection zone; an audible and visual “vehicle turning left” warning that operates when the near side indicators are in use; and blind spot cameras and an in-cab monitor that provides the driver with a full, 360-degree view.

Nigel Woolford, LSS Waste’s managing director, said: “Yorkshire is the cycling capital of the UK, a fact you can’t argue with when you see the sheer number of bicycles now on the streets and the amount of money being spent on cycle lanes throughout the county.”

“Unfortunately, this increase in bicycles has seen a surge in the number accidents involving bikes and HGVs, and in a great number of cases these occur when cyclists are riding in a driver’s near side blind spot. Halo completely eradicates this problem by alerting both cyclists and drivers of the potential danger.”

Talking at the introduction of the Halo system to the city’s streets last week. Leeds Rhinos’ captain, Danny McGuire said: “We take safety very seriously in everything we do, and we’re delighted to be helping one of our major partners as they work with SM UK to help make Leeds’ streets safer for cyclists.”

Wastesavers works with Sentinel to boost safety

Recycling services firm, Wastesavers, has recently worked with Sentinel Systems to improve the safety of its recycling vehicles in Newport.

Wastesavers work in partnership with Newport city council to provide kerbside recycling services to local people and businesses. Sentinel Systems was specified for the installation by vehicle providers, Romaquip in order to provide Wastesavers with safety tools for drivers when on the road. Sentinel’s products offered Wastesavers fully-protective camera systems for its vehicles to help the prevention of accidents in busy and public areas within Newport.

Sentinel Systems supplied and installed 360-degree camera systems to 18 of Wastesavers recycling vehicles. The company was chosen over its competitors as a result of their cost efficient and high quality camera safety systems.

Recycling and Health and Safety Manager, Ian Syms said: “Sentinel’s camera and safety systems have proved very advantageous to our drivers, and the systems have already been beneficial in proving numerous false claims in many of our vehicles. We would definitely consider installing more of Sentinel’s camera systems on further recycling vehicles in the future.”
