CK Services distributes green waste bins

Oadby & Wigston borough council has appointed CK Services to carry out distribution of wheelie bins for its new garden waste collection service.

CK Services, a division Lincolnshire-based plastics recycling firm CK Group, has so far rolled out 11,500 wheeled bins to households since the contract started in January.

The bins replace reusable garden waste sacks which were collected fortnightly under the Leicestershire borough’s previous service. Households could leave up to four sacks at the kerbside which the council claims were liable to split and overflow.

Around 50% of households have signed up to the new service and it is expected CK will deliver additional bins as more residents register to the new service.

Karen Parkes, a spokesperson for the borough council, said: “The CK Services team worked well with OWBC and helped every step of the way. All the bins were delivered on time and everything they said they would do, they did. This exceeded our expectations and we would not hesitate in using them again.”

Axion launches waste data logger

Axion Consulting has developed a data logging system for waste processing plants that aims to eliminate causes of downtime and reduce costs.

According to the firm, the monitoring device has cut downtime by 50% at its shredder waste advanced processing plant, which produces recycled polymers from end-of-life vehicles (ELV).

The logger, which can be used across other processing industries, prevents waste operators from restarting the plant until a stop cause has been inputted.

For a multi-site operation it also makes it possible to compare sites and performance of sites or shifts, with the added benefit of accessing data remotely when logged in.

Axion director Roger Morton said: “We developed it for ourselves because we couldn’t find anyone else offering a package for the waste industry that gave all the features we wanted, including interfacing with multiple PLCs and forcing a structured input of stop causes so that these can be analysed in a regulated way.”

Doppstadt champions operating safety of screens

Waste equipment manufacturer Doppstadt has carried out an ‘extensive update’ of the operating safety of its trommel screens.

The German firm has spent two years revising the safety concept of its trommel screen technology, which protects the machinery against unauthorised access.

An audible alarm has been installed for all hydraulic movements as well as automatic control with starting alarm and monitoring by door contact switches and emergency switches. If a door is opened during the machine operation the screen will stand still immediately. The machine can only run after a restart when all the doors are closed.

Meanwhile, the firm has announced that users of older screens will be able to update the safety features on their equipment with retrofit kits.

Frogsons invests in fleet tracking

Frogsons Waste Management has further invested in its fleet tracking capabilities following the expansion of its Sheffield facility.

The oil recycling firm – which operates a fleet of vaccum and cargo tankers – has chosen TRACKER’s fleet tracking ansd telematics solution to improve fuel effieicncy and lower costs.

Carl Arnold, transport manager for Frogsons Waste Management, said that the partnership with TRACKER would allow the firm to know the exact location of each driver and vehicle, including driver hours and would help it comply with industry best practice guidelines.

He said: “TRACKER’s fleet management system allows us to monitor speeding, idling, mileage and customer transport costs, ensuring we can get the best out of our fleet and look after our drivers, who may be driving long distances.

“With TRACKER we can also give our clients accurate journey and delivery times, as well as controlling costs, benefiting our business and our customers.”

Fitted with Hyva hook-loading equipment, the vehicles serve a network of local household waste and recycling centres.

Each vehicle collects and delivers up to 15 tonnes of materials, including cardboard, wood, plastics, paper and green waste, as well as furniture and other items for recycling or reuse.

The new vehicles arrived via the Heathrow branch of Rygor, Britain’s largest Mercedes-Benz Dealer, which took back seven previous vehicles in part-exchange.

Julian Appleby, LondonWaste’s head of operations, said: “As we look to ‘Reduce waste, Reuse it, Recycle it, and Recover energy’ from it, with disposal as the last resort, these low-emission, Euro VI vehicles are playing a vital role in moving materials to the right places in order to increase their value and usability.”

LondonWaste is wholly-owned and contracted by North London Waste Authority (NLWA) to provide efficient and environmentally responsible solutions that divert rubbish from landfill.
