Operations director Paul Leinster has temporarily taken over Baroness Young's duties as chief executive after she was hospitalised following the incident last week.

A spokeswoman from the Agency confirmed: “Barbara Young was recently involved in a horse riding accident. The accident resulted in Barbara requiring surgery to her arm and being kept in hospital for just over a week. She is now at home recuperating. In her absence Paul Leinster is acting Chief Executive.

“Barbara hopes to be able to return to work as soon as possible,” the spokeswoman added.

Best wishes
The Agency's director of environmental protection, Tricia Henton, stepped in for Baroness Young at a London event this morning on the cutting of red tape in the waste and recycling industry.

Speaking at the event, environment minister Elliot Morley said: “I would like to send my best wishes to Baroness Young for a speedy recovery.”
