The plant is fully operational having been completed by the contractor Hitachi Zosen Inova following a 33-month construction programme.
The first waste was delivered into the facility in October 2016 for commissioning.
Mercia’s sister company Severn Waste Services will operate the facility under its Environmental Permit issued by the Environment Agency.
Severn Waste Services and Mercia Waste Management are both jointly owned by FCC Environment and Urbaser Ltd.
Mercia
Mercia Waste Management signed an initial 25-year contract with Worcestershire county council and Herefordshire council in December 1998 for the treatment of waste from the two local authorities.
The EnviRecover facility has the capacity to treat up to 200,000 tonnes of waste per year, and can produce 15.5 MW of electricity for export to the grid.
Plans for the facility have been in the pipeline for a number of years, with the company having initially submitted proposals for the plant in 2009.
Project
The plant cost an estimated £165 million to develop, with the money provided by both of the local authorities.
Hitachi Zosen Inova grate technology has been installed for the combustion of waste, with the facility featuring a grate measuring 10.25 metres by 9.75 metres.
Commenting on the completion of the facility Councillor Harry Bramer, Herefordshire council’s cabinet member for contracts and assets, said: “With landfill capacity in short supply, I am pleased we have been able to deliver EnviRecover in partnership with Worcestershire county council. The fantastic new facility will accept and safely treat the region’s non-recyclable waste, and provide a valuable source of electricity for many years to come.”
