Entry call for Waste World Cup 2007

Organisers of the waste and recycling sector's annual football tournament, the Waste World Cup are seeking teams to take part in this year's competition.

The fifth annual tournament, it is to take place on Friday, September 7.

The competition, which was won last year by Recycling in Action, will once again see six aside teams of mixed gender competing over a one-day tournament for the coveted Cup.

Held at a first class venue, the Park Campus of the University of Northampton, the tournament emphasises a friendly atmosphere with a Fair Play theme.

Waste World Cup Organising Committee chair and senior lecturer at the University of Northampton, Dr Margaret Bates, said: “The University of Northampton are delighted to be hosting the fifth annual Waste World Cup, bringing together all parts of the wastes community to compete in a friendly atmosphere.”

Last year's tournament saw 29 teams battling it out in the group stage, with 300 footballers taking part from the private, public and voluntary sector.

The South Wales group of companies, Recycling in Action, won through after a tough final match against a determined ACM Waste Management (see letsrecycle.com story).

Entry

To enter a team in the Waste World Cup 2007, team managers are asked to email Margaret Bates at Margaret.Bates@northampton.ac.uk with details of possible key players and information about the team's general ability, playing style, influences and general ambitions on the field of play – no more than 150 words, please.

This year, the organisers would like to stress that all players must work for the organisation putting forward the team, unless prior consent is agreed with the tournament organisers.

Team numbers will be limited, with the Organising committee selecting teams based on the quality of their entry applications. Teams able to provide first aiders and/or referees may receive a head start in the selection process.

Entry for the WWC 2007 closes on July 31, 2005, after which the Grand Draw will take place to select the teams that will take part, and the groups in which they will play during the first round of the tournament. A £50 fee will be required from each team that takes part in order to cover a proportion of costs.

More information on the tournament, the rules and how to get to the venue are available on the official website of the Waste World Cup at www.letsrecycle.com/wwc
