Entries sought for Awards for Excellence 2011

Entries are being sought for the leading industry awards recognising achievement in the waste and recycling sector – the Awards for Excellence in Waste Management and Recycling 2011.

letsrecycle.com is seeking applications from councils, waste management companies and the third sector ahead of the eighth annual awards ceremony, which will take place at The Savoy Hotel in central London on May 12 2011.

Awards in 10 categories will be presented by Channel 4 News presenter and journalist Krishnan Guru-Murthy, with a drinks reception and a three-course meal before the awards themselves.

The 2010 Awards for Excellence in Waste Management and Recycling were hosted by BBC Ten OClock News presenter Huw Edwards with a keynote address from Jane Stephenson MBE, chief executive of Bristol-based consultancy Resource Futures (see letsrecycle.com story).

Over 300 members of the waste management and recycling sector attended last years event, which honoured a range of efforts from public, private and third sector initiatives to individual achievements and innovation in design of facilities.

Steve Eminton, editor of letsrecycle.com, said: The Awards for Excellence are a prestigious highlight in the waste management and recycling calendar and offer a real opportunity to reward the continued good work and innovation seen across the sector.

The 2011 Awards for Excellence will be the first to feature the newly-created category of Recycling Business of the Year, which will look to honour small, medium or large businesses which have helped to push recycling and waste management across their business.

The deadline for entries from the public, private and third sector is March 16 2011, with the Awards recognising success across 10 categories.

The categories are:

High Street Recycling Champion

This award recognises achievements in waste and recycling in the retail sector. This could be by a single shop, a larger retail outlet, a chain of stores or an out-of-town retail site.

Commercial Recycling Champion – sponsored by Hadfield Wood Recyclers

This award will recognise the dedication of an individual or team within the commercial and industrial sector in promoting recycling and sustainable waste management within their company or business division.

Innovation in Design of a Waste Management or Recycling Facilitysponsored by ESA

Entrants are likely to have used technology equipment and/or building design to enhance the way waste management work is carried out and to minimise the impact on the environment.

Waste Management Initiative in the Commercial or Public Sector sponsored by Shanks

This category is open to entrants who can show how they have organised high levels of recycling and/or waste sustainability for their own organisation or business, or are providing a first class recycling and or waste diversion/minimisation solution in the service they are themselves carrying out.

Collection Crew of the Year

This award will recognise the dedication and high-level of service provided by a collection crew involved in either waste collection, recycling or both.

Best Community Recycling Initiativesponsored by SCA Recycling

This award will recognise the achievements of a social enterprise/community recycling project to deliver improved recycling and waste management services and can include projects such as re-use, recycling, composting, education, minimisation and associated activities.

Best Local Authority Recycling Initiativesponsored by Palm Recycling

The award is targeted at an initiative in the municipal waste stream and will recognise a project developed and delivered by a local authority which indirectly or directly helps to promote one or more of greater recycling, composting and sustainability. A broad range of work is eligible for this category from communication campaigns, work on charging through to collection and infrastructure projects.

Local Authority Recycling Championsponsored by UPM

The local authority recycling champion award will be awarded to the council officer or councillor from a local authority which has achieved a very high level of success in driving up household waste recycling rates.

Civic Amenity Site of the Yearsponsored by REPIC

The civic amenity (CA) site of the year will have successful and effective day-to-day operations that can be measured and seen. The entry is open to operators of all types of CA sites which can be described in many ways, including as household waste recycling centres.

Recycling Business of the Year

This newly-created award aims to recognise work done by a company, large or small, operating in the UK that has provided a consistent and thorough service on waste and recycling for its customers.
