Entries are being sought for the two most prestigious sets of awards in the 2009 waste and recycling calendar.

letsrecycle.com is seeking applications from councils, industry, the third sector and individuals for its Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management, to be presented at the Landmark Hotel in London on October 20.

And, the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) is inviting councils to put in for its awards, which will be presented at a ceremony in Liverpool on October 8. The LARAC awards are being run this year by letsrecycle.com and in an important move are standing in their own right rather than participating within the National Recycling Awards.

Both sets of awards are renowned for showcasing innovation, dedication and success in recycling and sustainable waste management.

Steve Eminton, editor of letsrecycle.com, said: “We are delighted to announce the launch of the two awards ceremonies, which offer a broad range of opportunities for hard work, innovation and dedication to be recognised as excellent in the recycling and sustainable waste management arena.”

Awards for Excellence

The Awards for Excellence, now in their sixth year, recognise achievement in nine categories:

-High Street Recycling Champion
-Commercial Recycling Champion
-Waste Management Initiative in the Commercial or Public Sector
-Innovation in the Design of a Waste Management Facility
-Collection Crew of the Year
-Best Community Recycling Initiative
-Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative
– Local Authority Recycling Champion
-CA site of the Year

The 2009 Awards lunch and ceremony will start with a champagne reception, and then lunch, followed by the awards themselves.

Entries are invited from local authorities, companies, the community sector and individuals.

Mr Eminton said: “We were delighted with the response we received to the awards over the past years – not just the volume of entries we attracted, but the sheer quality of the work that we were able to showcase. We expect to see even more examples of success this year.”

LARAC

The LARAC awards meanwhile will be presented by LARAC chair Joy Blizzard at an Awards Celebration Evening to coincide with the annual LARAC conference. The decision to present dedicated LARAC awards rather than participating within another event is seen as symbolising the importance of the organisation in its own right and allowing for the achievements of the local authority sector to be better recognised.

The awards will recognise achievement by local authority recycling officers in five categories:

-Best Communications Campaign of the Year
-Best Partnership Award
-Best Regional Project/Initiative
-Best Waste Minimisation or Prevention Project
-Recycling Officer of the Year.

The LARAC awards will be officially unveiled at the Futuresource exhibition and conference event at ExCeL London in June. For more details, call (020) 7633 4516.

Paul Sanderson, editor of Materials Recycling Week, told letsrecycle.com, that the explanation that LARAC participated within the National Recycling Awards was incorrect. Mr Sanderson said: “This is not true as LARAC has never had their awards participating in the National Recycling Awards. This event was co-located with the LARAC Conference, but was organised by Emap and MRW with support from LARAC.”
