The 250,000 represents a slice of the income the company gets from selling packaging waste recovery notes (PRNs) from the scrap metal packaging which it handles. An unspecified additional amount will be available to businesses either for their own projects or in partnership with local authorities.

EMR will be looking for submissions which are for schemes targeting packaging from household waste that could involve cans, bottles and other materials. Applications can be made any time during the year as there are no deadlines.
Colin Iles, managing director at European Metal Recycling Ltd, said: “Reload provides local authorities, and for the first time businesses, with an excellent opportunity to get a head start in helping the UK meet impending recycling targets.”
Councils and businesses can now submit applications for the cash online at www.emrltd.com.
Last year EMR shared the 160,000 award fund between 11 local authorities in the UK – recycling bins and can crushers were introduced into schools in Kent, the number of split litter bins was increased in town centres in south Devon and research into how to encourage students to recycle more was kicked off at a university in Exeter.
Maximum
Each of the successful local authority applicants will be awarded with a maximum of 60,000 to fund projects that are either totally or partially focused on recovering metal packaging.
EMR sees the Reload scheme as “playing an active part in moving the UK towards meeting the requirements of the European Packaging Waste Directive, which states that 50% of all metal packaging waste should be being recycled by December 2008.”
