Eco Composting opens new wood recycling facility

Dorset-based recycler Eco Composting has opened a new facility for recycling unwanted pallets and packing crates.

The company will take unwanted wood from local companies to produce environmentally-friendly materials. Untreated wood will be chipped and separated into two grades – coarser material will go to Slough Heat & Power, one of the few UK power stations that burns waste wood as fuel.

The finer material will be sent for the production of MDF, fibreboard and chipboard. Sawdust produced by the process will be supplied in bulk to farms and stables along the south coast.

Companies will pay 19.50 per tonne to tip pallets at the Eco facility, which is part of an expansion programme that will see four new recycling centres installed in the area during 2004.

Eco's director of sales and marketing, Quinton Watts, said: “Feedback from the business community is very positive – they are only too glad to have a quick way to dispose of their pallets and crates, and recycling them is a bonus for everybody.”

As well as wood from companies, Eco will also accept untreated timber from household disposal sites. The firm also recycles green garden wood as part of its organic compost facility.
