The app is called @home and is also available in a handful of other boroughs across the UK. Users have to enter their email address, postcode and then property address.
The app provides users with details of recycling and waste services provided at a specific address, collection updates, as well as information about what can be recycled. Residents can also receive reminders to put certain containers out.
It was created by Agile Applications, a software company which develops software for the local government sector.
‘Simple’
Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, Ealing cabinet member for transport environment and leisure said: “The app provides a simple and quick way to do everything from checking your next collection date to finding out what household waste is recyclable.
Cllr Mahfouz added that as “Ealing currently recycles more than half of its household waste” he wants to make the process as easy as possible for people to recycle and improve in the future.
“I encourage residents to go online and download the app to ensure they have all the information on their rubbish and recycling collections at the touch of a button.”
Costs
The service costs councils £2,400 annually; with set up costs ranging from 2,000-£6,000 based upon the data the council has to hand.
Kerbside properties in Ealing have weekly food waste recycling and fortnightly wheelie bin recycling and garden waste recycling services. Items need to be placed in the correct container for collection and are collected on different days across the council area.
Residents who live a flat above a shop, or in an estate use the mixed clear sack recycling service, or will have communal recycling facilities. Most households have recycling and rubbish collected on alternate weeks: recycling and food waste one week; rubbish and food waste the next week.
