The company claims the facility will recycle 80% of the 10,000 tonnes of material it will handle every month, including plastic, cardboard, paper, wood and demolition waste. Contracts have already been secured for the recyclate, many of which are with local firms.
Half the 3 million cost has been spent on machinery made by Burnley-based Valley Engineering. Soil will be separated out via a trommel, a picking belt will enable the removal of plastic, cardboard, metal and wood, while a blowing system will clean any hardcore.
Will Wellings, managing director of Pink Skips, said about 75% of capacity will be used by the company, which has a fleet of 35 skip lorries and RELs. A further 20% will be used by the local council while 5% will be used by private operators.
He said: “As a company we felt we had to something to help the environment. We saw the potential initially with soil and wood which we were taking to landfill but are resaleable items.”
The company, which was started by Wellings in 1998 with one skip lorry, currently takes all waste it collects to landfill.
