As of this month, Countrystyle is collecting plastics bottles from public bring banks located at 10 sites across the borough serving the councils 110,000 residents. The Kent-based firm has replaced Viridor as the councils plastics collection contractor.
Countrystyle has provided specialist containers to serve the contract and estimates it will collect over 300 tonnes of the plastic bottles from residents each year. The firm will take all of the material to its Ridham depot where it will be bulked and sent to facilities such as Closed Loop Recyclings Dagenham bottle reprocessing plant.
Material accepted at the bring sites includes PET soft drink bottles, HDPE milk bottles and PP pots, tubs and trays. The total value of the contract is estimated to be around 105,000.
Veolia Environmental Services currently holds the councils waste and recycling collections contract collecting paper, steel and aluminium cans from the kerbside via a green box, as well as food and garden waste in a green wheeled bin. Black wheeled bins are collected on alternate weeks to recyclable material.
Collection
Commenting on the deal, Countrystyles managing director, Chris Howard, said: Our aim is to support Kents local authorities and businesses by providing services that are reliable, flexible, cost effective and most importantly, locally available right here in Kent. This is what our existing customers tell us is important to them.
Working within a circular resource economy, Countrystyle sees it from both angles. We collect dry mixed recyclables quickly and efficiently from customers with waste across Kent and further afield; we sort, process and convert waste into new end products and quality raw materials; and finally, we deliver our tailored products to reprocessors and end users. Making sure our haulage fleet and our facilities have a low carbon footprint is a key part of our plan as is aligning our network of facilities to ensure route optimisation.
